PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT VS PRAYING IN THE UNDERSTANDING
(Unlocking Higher Dimensions of Effective Prayer)
TO THE BIBLE
📖 1 Corinthians 14:14–15 (NKJV)
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”
LET’S TALK
Prayer is multi-dimensional. Just as a man is spirit, soul, and body, so prayer flows in dimensions that reach beyond human intellect into the eternal realm of the Spirit. If prayer is to be effective, it must transcend the limits of our understanding and touch the realm where the Holy Spirit empowers, guides, and energizes us.
Paul makes a profound distinction: praying in the understanding versus praying in the Spirit. When you pray with the understanding, you articulate your desires, requests, and thanksgiving in your known language. This is valuable because it helps your mind stay engaged, your thoughts aligned, and your petitions clearly expressed. But Paul acknowledges a limitation—our understanding is finite. We do not always know the full scope of God’s will or the intricacies of the situations we face.
This is why praying in the Spirit—praying in tongues—becomes indispensable. Romans 8:26 tells us, “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” When you pray in tongues, your spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, prays mysteries directly aligned with God’s perfect will (1 Corinthians 14:2). You bypass the limitations of human reasoning and engage heaven’s strategy.
Think of it this way: praying in the understanding is like walking on the shore, but praying in the Spirit is like diving into the depths of the ocean. One keeps you steady, but the other unlocks hidden treasures that cannot be found on the surface. This is why Paul declared, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (1 Corinthians 14:18). He knew the effectiveness and dynamism of this kind of prayer.
But notice Paul’s wisdom: he doesn’t abolish one in favor of the other. He says, “I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.” Effective prayer is balanced—it blends the precision of the understanding with the power of the Spirit. You declare God’s Word with your understanding, affirming promises and decrees. Then you shift into the Spirit, where the language of heaven takes over, building you up (Jude 1:20), releasing divine mysteries, and birthing supernatural outcomes.
Beloved, if you want a prayer life that consistently produces results, you must engage both dimensions. Speak in your understanding, but refuse to remain confined there. Soar higher. Dive deeper. Pray in the Spirit and let the rivers of living water flow (John 7:38–39). This is the pathway to prayer that transforms, heals, delivers, and aligns earth with heaven.
GO DEEPER
📖 Romans 8:26–27 (AMPC)
So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. 27 And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the [Holy] Spirit… because the Spirit intercedes and pleads [before God] in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God’s will.
đź“– 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
đź“– Jude 1:20 (KJV)
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.
đź“– Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
