PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION & THANKSGIVING

  • TO THE BIBLE
Philippians 4:6 (AMP) – “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your specific requests known to God.”
    Devotional Insight

The prayer of supplication is heartfelt, humble, and earnest petition before God. It is how we present our specific requests, burdens, and desires to Him. Scripture encourages us to bring everything—great or small—before the Father in supplication. But here lies the secret: supplication must be joined with thanksgiving.

Many believers pray earnestly, yet undermine their supplication by replacing it with constant worry or repeated asking. They keep “petitioning again and again” as though God has not heard them. But true supplication, once made, must be followed by thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the proof that we believe God has already answered.

This is why Paul teaches: “By prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6). Thanksgiving is not an afterthought—it is the posture of faith. It anchors your heart in confidence, replacing anxiety with peace.

Think of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:10-18. She poured out her soul in supplication before the Lord, then rose up with her countenance no longer sad. Why? Because she believed God heard her, and she left rejoicing. Her supplication transitioned into thanksgiving, and her miracle (Samuel) followed.

Jesus also modeled this. At the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:41-43), before commanding Lazarus to come forth, He first prayed a prayer of thanksgiving: “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” That’s faith at work—supplication made, thanksgiving sealing it, and manifestation following.

Thanksgiving is how we hold steady after supplication. It prevents us from wavering. It keeps us joyful, peaceful, and patient until the physical answer appears. While supplication voices our need, thanksgiving declares our assurance that the need is already met in Christ.

SUPPLICATION + THANKSGIVING = EFFECTIVE PRAYER

  1. Supplication – Humbly presents specific requests to God.
  2. Thanksgiving – Confirms we believe God heard and answered.
  3. Together – They create a cycle of faith: petition made → assurance received → thanksgiving maintained until manifestation.

When supplication ends in thanksgiving, it becomes the prayer of faith in action.

CONFESSION

Father, I thank You because You hear me always. As I lift up my supplications, I refuse to worry or doubt. Instead, I rejoice in thanksgiving, knowing it is done. My heart is anchored in faith, and my life is filled with peace and joy as I see answers manifest, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

Psalm 50:14-15 – Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Colossians 4:2 – Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

ACT

Today, think of one pressing request you’ve already lifted to God in supplication. Instead of asking again, spend time rejoicing in thanksgiving, declaring: “Father, I thank You because it is done!” Sing, shout, and celebrate your victory before it appears.
