Tithing

On the issue of Tithing and Humanity.
Yes, Jesus Christ actually mentioned tithing in his teachings. Tithing refers to the practice of giving a tenth of one’s income or produce to support religious institutions, charities, or the poor.

In the New Testament, Jesus refered to the subject of tithing in the following passages:

  • Matthew 23:23-24: Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for prioritizing tithing over more important matters like justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
  • Luke 11:42: Jesus similarly rebukes the Pharisees for tithing meticulously while neglecting justice and love for God.
  • Luke 18:12: Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, where the Pharisee boasts about tithing, but the tax collector’s humble prayer is justified.

Jesus’ teachings emphasize that tithing should not be done for outward appearances or to earn favor with God, but rather as an expression of inner devotion, love, and generosity. He prioritizes the heart’s attitude over mere external practices.

Keep in mind that Jesus’ teachings on tithing were within the context of Jewish law and traditio, speaking to them based on their background for easy understanding. His focus was on the motivations and heart attitudes behind tithing, rather than the practice itself.
